The contempt charges passed in the House represent yet another loss for progressives. Our "stab in the back" Congress has yet once again socked it to us. This is nothing more than another attempt to appear to be taking meaningful action while holding steadfastly to the principle of "do nothing". Go below the fold to find out why this is so.
One: The time to do this was last year when Congress was at the point of needing testimony from these witnesses to carry out their investigations in an orderly manner.
Two: Wexler states that the AG will not initiate an investigation. The path of civil contempt, the alternative provided by the House, will lead to a legal battle so prolonged that Bush will be out of office before the issue is resolved. Congressional Democrats are well aware of this.
Three: House Dems have done everything BUT initiate inherent contempt. There are conditions under which the Speaker alone can initiate an inherent contempt investigation and those conditions would be very easy to set up.
Four: Chariman Conyers is actively blocking impeachment hearings under which the president would not be covered by executive priviledge regarding information requested by Congress. Why preclude getting all of the information while initiating a long legal process to get only a portion of the information? This is called intellectual dishonesty.
Five: No congressional committee has initiated hearings into the credible allegations by Sibel Edmons, including her allegations of criminal activity and, possibly, treason.
It could not be more obvious that the real intent of Congress is exactly the opposite of it's stated intent. Rather than seeking to uncover the facts, they seek to prevent fact finding at every turn.
One cannot help wonder if this behavior by Congress could be related in any way to the statement by Sibel Edmonds that "high profile House Democrats" were involved in the activites which she has described. To be sure, Republicans are alleged to have been involved as well but that would be little comfort to Dems during an election year.
