Senator Obama has spoken eloquently but has failed to deliver. I am astounded by the number of Democratic voters at this site who so badly wish to believe that Obama is GOING TO BE about change that they refuse to recognize that his refusal to oppose the proposed FISA legislation, now, in real time, shows that he is willing to support legislation which allows Bushco to continue it's unconstitutional activities. Let's look at what Obama has said regarding his FISA position.
From the Obama blogsite:
"This was not an easy call for me. I know that the FISA bill that passed the House is far from perfect. I wouldn't have drafted the legislation like this, and it does not resolve all of the concerns that we have about President Bush's abuse of executive power."
I'm really not interested, Senator Obama, in whether this was an easy call for you or a hard one. I'm interested in outcomes, not in process!
The bill is not merely far from perfect, it is atrocious!
It doesn't matter that you would not have drafted the legislation like this. The simple fact is that this is the legislation that you will be voting on!
No one expects this legislation to resolve ALL of the concerns that we have about President Bush's abuse of executive power. We only expect legislation which resolves Bush's abuse of executive power as regards domestic spying.
Again, from Senator Obama:
"But I also believe that the compromise bill is far better than the Protect America Act that I voted against last year."
So what if you believe that it's a better bill? We've heard, "We're makin progress" for over seven years now. We don't want progress, we want acceptable results.
Senator Obama states:
"Given the choice between voting for an improved yet imperfect bill, and losing important surveillance tools, I've chosen to support the current compromise."
"Imperfect bill" is a gross understatement! The choice here is NOT between "perfect" and "imperfect". The choice is between legislation which affirms The Constitution and legislation which undermines The Constitution! You have not merely chosen to support the current "compromise", you chosen to compromise yourself, The Constitution and the American people!
He goes on to add:
"But I think it is worth pointing out that our agreement on the vast majority of issues that matter outweighs the differences we may have."
Our agreement on issues is based upon rhetoric. Our disagreement on FISA legislation is based upon an actual vote on a piece of legislation.
No, Senator Obama, our agreement in principle on issues does not outweigh your support for a piece of bad legislation which undermines The Constitution.
Senator Obama, you're talking the talk but you are NOT walking the walk!
